Existentialism is a Humanism Essay

In Existentialism is a Humanism, Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) presents an open depiction of existentialism. A key thought of existentialismâ€and of the human condition†is that presence goes before quintessence. The embodiment of something is its significance, its expected reason. A paper shaper is made to cut paper; that is its point. People, be that as it may, don't have an embodiment. Man exists, turns up, shows up on the scene, and, just a while later, characterizes himself. We have no more prominent reason, no pre-decided arrangement, no extreme importance. We have, in Sartre’s words, no human instinct, since there is nothing (for example God) outside of us which would imagine it for us. We are just here, and it is dependent upon us to characterize ourselves. Obligation Man is nothing else except for what he thinks about himself. We have decision, we have subjectivity, and we pick what we will make ourselves to be; we are altogether liable for our reality: Thus, existentialism’s first move is to make each man mindful of what he is and to make the full duty of his reality lay on him. This idea is frequently not effectively acknowledged. ‘Subjectivity’ is a word that aggravates up many. â€Å"If everything is emotional at that point nothing is objective; nothing is total! Our qualities are simply our impulses! Nothing is correct or wrong! Riffraff, riffraff, rabble!† Sartre answers that, â€Å"it is inconceivable for man to rise above human subjectivity.† He isn’t saying â€Å"I lean toward subjectivity over objectivity,† he’s asking, â€Å"how can we not be subjective?† Even the strict person who accepts that ethical quality is outright and originates from God must, sooner or la ter, decide to accept this is the situation. Our duty is a gift and a revile. It drives us to feel things like anguish, hopelessness, and gloom. Anguish We experience anguish notwithstanding our subjectivity, on the grounds that by picking what we are to do, we ‘choose for everyone’. At the point when you settle on a choice you are stating â€Å"this is the means by which anybody should carry on given these circumstances.† Many individuals don’t feel anguish, yet this is on the grounds that they are â€Å"fleeing from it.† If you don’t feel a feeling of tension when you decide, it’s in light of the fact that you are disregarding your â€Å"total and profound responsibility† toward yourself and the entirety of mankind. Hopelessness Forlornness is the possibility that â€Å"God doesn't exist and that we need to confront all the results of this.† There is no ethical quality from the earlier. There is no total correct. There is no extreme appointed authority. This is an exceptionally upsetting thought. As Dostoievsky stated, â€Å"If God didn’t exist, everything would be conceivable [permissible].† Without God we don't have anything to stick to. â€Å"There is no determinism, man is free, man is opportunity. [†¦] We have no qualities or orders to go to which legitimize our conduct.† as such, we have no reasons, and we are totally answerable for our choices. What are our qualities? The best way to decide them is to settle on a choice. Toward the day's end, your beliefs aren’t what matter; what makes a difference is the thing that you really did. Gloom Despair emerges in light of the fact that we just have capacity to change things that are inside our capacity to changeâ€and there is a great deal we can't change. The truth is unprejudiced and out of your control, aside from little parts of it to a great extent. We despair since we can never have full control of things to come. What Will Happen Will Happen Tomorrow, after my passing, a few men may choose to set up Fascism, and the others might be weak and jumbled enough to let them do it. One party rule will at that point be the human reality, so much the more terrible for us. Notwithstanding what is correct or off-base, fortunate or unfortunate, and whether or not these are absolutes or not, â€Å"things will be as man will have concluded they are to be.† What will happen will occur and humankind will be completely liable for what it does. Does this mean we should turn out to be inactively tolerating of what will occur? Sartre says the specific inverse. Does that imply that I should desert myself to quietism? No. [†¦] Quietism is the demeanor of individuals who state, â€Å"Let others do what I can’t do.† The convention I am introducing is the exceptionally inverse of quietism, since it pronounces, â€Å"There is no reality with the exception of in action.† Moreover, it goes further, since it includes, â€Å"Man is nothing else than his arrangement; he exists just to the degree that he satisfies himself; he is hence nothing else than the troupe of his demonstrations, nothing else than his life. No Excuses This is the reason existentialism shocks a few people. It puts such a weight of duty unequivocally on their shoulders. They can’t remain to think they were to blame for not being an incredible or effective individual, for having no extraordinary companionships or love. They think they are the survivor of conditions; they haven’t had the best possible instruction, relaxation, or motivators; they haven’t found the ideal individual yet; they haven’t had the chance to show their enormity. Sartre, nonetheless, says that â€Å"The quitter makes himself weak, the legend makes himself heroic.† The craftsman is a craftsman in view of the centerpieces he made, not in light of what he could have made. The mathematician is well known for the math he did, not what he possibly could have done. We find this is â€Å"a unforgiving idea to somebody whose life hasn’t been a success.† We are answerable for our triumphs and disappointments. And yet, this brutality compels us to confront the fantastically significant truth that: Reality alone is what matters. Sartre sees these perspectives not as a cynicism, however as a â€Å"optimistic toughness.† Optimistic in that we are the leaders of our lives; our predetermination is inside our hands; we are urged to make a move. Sartre sums up his concept of confidence and activity in the accompanying entry. In this way, I think we have addressed some of the charges concerning existentialism. You see that it can not be taken for a way of thinking of quietism, since it characterizes man as far as activity; nor for a skeptical depiction of manâ€there is no convention progressively idealistic, since man’s fate is inside himself; nor for an endeavor to debilitate man from acting, since it discloses to him that the main expectation is in his acting and that activity is the main thing that empowers a man to live. Is Choice Arbitrary? Sartre closes this piece with a further safeguard of subjectivism, where I wish he had gone into somewhat more detail. He says individuals are as yet not happy with the possibility of subjectivism, and complaints typically come in one of the accompanying structures: 1. â€Å"Well at that point, you’re ready to do anything, regardless! You’re advancing anarchy!† But this isn’t the point. It is beyond the realm of imagination to expect to not pick. In not settling on a decision you are as yet deciding not to pick. Decision is inevitable; we are â€Å"condemned to be free† on the grounds that we are human, regardless of whether we are existentialists. 2. â€Å"You can’t condemn others, in light of the fact that there’s no motivation to incline toward one plan to another!† We can in any case hold esteems, and qualities show up out of the decisions we make. Through our activities (as an individual and as a gathering), we make morals. 3. â€Å"Everything about your decision is arbitrary!† We characterize ourselves through our activities, â€Å"in relationship to involvement.† And as we make ourselvesâ€as we make choicesâ€it is ludicrous to state we are picking discretionarily.

Airlines Customer - Free Essay Example

AAA Auto Club South Problem Statement Classic Airlines needs to focus on the opportunities available to them in order to increase profits and sales through a new and improved customer rewards program. By performing an environmental analysis, using the SWOTT, SLEPT or PESTLE model (Freiwald, 2007, p. 1-2) the company will be able to identify internal and external forces that can have an affect on the organization and airline industry as a whole. Using these models will also allow the company to conduct effective surveys to enable them to become the voice of the customer (Freiwald, 2007, p. 1) turning its attention to their needs and by revising its current CRM system to fit a marketing strategy appropriate for accomplishing the companys goals and objectives. The company must deliver services desired by the customers or they will continue to lose profits and market share in the airline industry. Classic Airlines must also recognize the needs of all employees, both union and non-union, and perhaps implement an incentive program which could help boost moral and motivation. Company Overview Part of the American Automobile Association, AAA Auto Club Souths (ACS) has an image that is recognized internationally. ACSs purpose is to provide unsurpassed service to every customer; treating the members the way you want to be treated by providing courteous and friendly service (AAA Auto Club South, 2006). They are dedicated to attracting and retaining quality employees; therefore, they use various motivational strategies and reward systems to keep the employees enthusiastic about work. Although, the companys compensation package is very competitive, they offer various incentives and reward programs. The purpose of the additional incentives and rewards is to help the company achieve its goals by attracting, motivating, and retaining highly qualified support staff and salespeople. Keys Findings-Employee Incentives Beneficial incentives offered at ACS include paid holidays, vacation and personal time, health, dental and life insurance for the employees and their families and flexible work schedules in some departments. In addition, the company started experimenting with educational assistance by providing employees $500 per year as an opportunity to improve their work skills and upgrade their knowledge in an effort to develop their career within the organization. Due to the increasing interest and efforts of the employees the education assistance was raised to $1000 per year (AAA Auto Club South, 2006). One of the monetary reward programs offered at AAA is the quarterly incentive bonus, which is based on departmental goals and not the individual. This reward system was implemented to promote teamwork. Another reward which is awarded annually is the Extraordinary Performers Bonus (AAA Auto Club South, 2006). This program focuses on goals set by the employee and his or her ideas which can be implemented to improve departmental practices and processes, possibly reducing costs. It urges employees to think outside the box and look beyond their assigned job duties. The amount awarded to the employees nominated for this award is based on the companys success in meeting the organizational goals for the year. ACS also offers non-monetary incentives to motivate employees and help them build feelings of confidence and satisfaction. With non-monetary incentives employers can reward employees for a job well done through opportunities and recognition instead of cash (Ballentine, Kepner, McKenzie, Wysocki, 2003). According to Ryan (n.d.), consistent employee recognition is a key factor in retaining top performing workers while allowing management to achieve department and organizational goals. To recognize successful employees, ACS strives to emphasize on the success instead of dwelling on the things that went wrong. Managers deliver recognition and reward openly and publicly and they are tailored to be unique for the people receiving them. Some of the non-monetary rewards ACS offers are t-shirts, mugs, and certificates. Many people feel these awards have memory value because of the continued meaning they have long after a cash award would be spent. They also have trophy value because it can be shown off to others. Although, non-monetary rewards are less costly than cash awards, they still provide the same level of motivation for performance improvements. Key Findings- Customer Benefits ACS offers over 20 different services and benefits to its customers which include membership, travel, insurance, automotive, and financial services (AAA Auto Club South, 2008a). With the AAA membership, customers can save on many expenses such as dining, restaurants, attractions, car rentals, shopping venues, and hotels. ACS members can also save money when purchasing a new or used car through the Car Buying program which includes various dealerships that offer low, no haggle pricing (AAA Auto Club South, 2008b). Members can also receive discounts on auto repairs by visiting any AAA Approved Auto Repair facility. Through a partnership with Bank of America, the company offers the AAA Cash Rewards MasterCard, AAA Platinum Plus Visa, and the AAA Rewards American Express (AAA Auto Club South, 2008b). Its Platinum Plus Visa gives customers the opportunity to receive up to a 5% gas rebate when paying at the pump. The AAA WorldPoints Visa allows customers to earn a point for every doll ar spent on retail purchases and double points on gas purchases redeem them for any reward, from travel to cash to merchandise. This card also has no blackout dates for travel points redeemed (AAA Auto Club South, 2008b). Employee Success As a result of the various motivational strategies practiced by AAA, the company experienced a reduction in employee dissatisfaction, complaints and turnover, a decrease in customer complaints and dissatisfaction, and an increase in company growth and profits. Due to the increased employee motivation the overall work environment was friendly, supportive, and cooperative, with staff working efficiently and effectively. As a rule, motivational levels in employees tend to fluctuate and individuals are challenged to perform their work at an optimal level at all times. Therefore, the motivation programs helped to not only boost employee morale but also encouraged intrinsic motivation which resulted in optimal output. Customer Success ACSs dedication and unsurpassed service to its members has resulted in a membership base of over four million members. The company is continuously looking for ways to make improvements to better serve its members, giving them the freedom and safety to travel. By providing members with a peace of mind, total satisfaction, and exceptional value, ACS has devised a club wide goal to achieve 7 million members by 2017 (K. Brockway, personal communication, June 20, 2008). ACS will attain this goal through its relentless commitment to customer satisfaction and the passion to make the AAA membership indispensable (AAA Auto Club South, 2008c). What can Classic Airlines Learn Classic Airlines can use some of the same strategies applied by ACS. Just as ACS offers various benefits that appeal to its millions of members, Classic can look at adding benefits to its Classic Rewards Program, such as discounts to restaurants and shopping venues. The company can perform surveys to pinpoint the services customers would like to see offered by the airline that are more geared towards their specific needs or age groups. This would be a great opportunity for them to show their dedication to customer satisfaction and increase the customer base. The airline could also look at collaborating with a major financial institution, as ACS did with Bank of America, to offer extra reward points or flier miles to customers every time they use that particular credit card when purchasing tickets. Other airline carriers have already been successful with this type of partnership. For example, Chase offers the Southwest Airline Rapid Rewards Visa Signature Card and the British Air ways (BA) Visa Signature Card (Chase, 2008). With the Southwest card, members can earn double reward dollars on flights or vacation packages through the airline carrier (Chase, 2008). With the British Airway card, members earn 20,000 bonus BA points after the first purchase, along with other savings such as the opportunity to receive free companion tickets from the airline (Chase, 2008). This would be a good incentive for Classic to offer its members in hopes of gaining their loyalty and increasing membership and profits. With the employees, classic should implement a reward program, monetary or non-monetary, that promotes teamwork and boosts moral. This program can focus on the individual goals of the employee set by the employee and his or her ideas which can be implemented to improve departmental practices and processes, possibly reducing costs. The company can also involve the employees in the beginning phases of creating a program to find out what motivates them. This system can encourage them to go above and beyond their assigned job duties. References AAA Auto Club South. (2006). AAA Auto Club South Employee Handbook. Tampa, FL: Human Resources. Cognitive Psychology Topics For An Essay

Cognitive Psychology Topics For An EssayThere are various cognitive psychology topics for an essay. In addition to the general areas of human nature that can be covered in a typical essay, these subjects also deal with various issues regarding reasoning and planning. This is why the best essays on cognitive psychology tend to be those that work on solving problems, by identifying how someone comes up with a solution to a problem. The idea behind this approach is to take the original problem and then come up with ways that the subject can solve it. This is done by developing a specific plan for solving the problem, or coming up with ways to solve it. This can include putting together clues that lead to the solution. Not all essays on these topics will necessarily be for students. Many people do not want to write for long articles; they would rather just read a book instead. However, this does not mean that any essay on these topics is less valuable. The process of deciding how to plan a nd problem solve is still a very valuable skill that many people need.People who are stuck for ideas on how to find a solution to a problem might find it useful to read through a variety of books, magazines, and websites, in order to find different ways of solving problems. These types of resources can be found both online and offline. Online resources can include reading online articles, blogs, forums, and other information sources that provide examples of how people come up with solutions to problems. These essay topics can also come from a different perspective. For example, instead of just looking at problem solving, the person could look at other aspects of human nature. This can include how people see the world around them, what types of society they live in, or even how they view themselves. For example, if the person believes that they are lazy or unmotivated, then a plan for eliminating laziness motivation can be used. Each of these methods has different techniques for workin g on different problems. However, most of these types of methods will share similar techniques, including being able to identify a problem, and coming up with a plan to solve it. When coming up with a plan, it is important to take into account how well the subject is able to adapt to new situations, as well as how well they see the world around them.In addition to the different methods for coming up with essay topics on these topics, there is also the issue of how the methods are presented. A key part of essay writing is how the topic is presented. There are several different ways to approach this, but the best way is to let the subject be the main point of interest, while providing a supporting argument from a third party. While people might disagree on a certain topic, it is important to address how they arrive at their conclusions. Doing so is important, and allows people to come up with different conclusions, based on different circumstances. While all of these topics are common to many topics, it is important to identify the ones that people are more likely to be using in their essays. For example, if they are using a bunch of different ways to solve a problem, then this might be the most common type of answer.

Brave New World Huxley Predicted Many Events of t Essay Example For Students

Brave New World: Huxley Predicted Many Events of t Essay he FutureBrave New World: Huxley Predicted Many Events of the FutureAldous Huxley wrote Brave New World out of fear of societys apparent lackof morals and corrupt behaviour during the roaring twenties. Huxley believedthat the future was doomed to a non-individualistic, conformist society, asociety void of the family unit, religion and human emotions. Throughout thenovel, Huxley predicts many events for the future, most of which concentrate ona morally corrupt society. The most important of these predictions include:greater sexual freedom, over-population, brain-washing/sleep-teaching, and theuse of mind altering drugs. Aldous Huxleys Brave New World warns of apossible future dystopia, based on social attitudes and medical advancements ofhis time. Huxleys future dystopia is created largely by perverted sexualfreedoms, which in turn cause corrupt individuals, entirely lacking ethics andmorals. Sexual promiscuity appears to be a much more frequent activity nowthen it was in the Thirties. Critics blame the advent of the pill fordeclining morality and indiscriminate sexual activity. Many believe that eachtime medicine reduces the risk of unwanted diseases and pregnancies, society,on the whole, will increase its sexual activity. Huxleys prediction ofpromiscuity is based on his iron law of sexuality:As political and economic freedom diminishes, sexual freedom tendscompensatingly to increase. A current example of Huxleys belief is China. China is the last remaining communist regime, it also suffers from having onefifth of the worlds population within its borders. Needless to say, Chinaslarge population is a direct result of a very sexually active society. AldousHuxleys fears of the future caused him to write about sexual freedom and theresulting over-population in Brave New World. Over-population is another problem which is addressed by Huxley, andis the direct result of sexual freedom. The fear which Huxley addressesconcerning population control is: Food supplies cannot grow as fast as peoplecan, and population growth in underdeveloped countries will jeopardize theworld order. Simply stated the growing population of earth will consume morethan it will be able to produce, unless some form of regulating births can becreated. This is an obvious truth today, as millions of people are starvingeach day. The brave new world that Huxley speaks of, is a warning to mankindconcerning its destruction of the laws of nature. For example, marriage isforbidden, as well as, pregnancies, and mothers are non-existent becausepossible children result in abortion. In Brave New World over-population is solved by societys ability toproduce as many or as few humans as are necessary to keep the population atequilibrium. The solution is test-tube babies or bottled babies as they arereferred to in the book. Effective birth control of such a large population isdifficult to achieve, especially in a society where people are encouraged to besexually active with numerous partners. Today, the world is facing over-population head on, with mixed results. Abortions are not readily accepted bymost, and birth control in third world countries is virtually impossible. Huxley realizes the problem with mass birth control, and solves it by makingseventy percent of the female population sterile, while only thirty percent ofthe women remain fertile. By leaving thirty percent of the women fertile,Huxley is able to show that even though birth control on a large scale isdifficult, it is possible to achieve. Through the religious use ofcontraceptives, pregnancies rarely occur, however, when a pregnancy does occurit results in an immediate abortion. Huxleys fear of over-population and thecontrol of so many people is an obvious concern which comes to light in BraveNew World. .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b , .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .postImageUrl , .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b , .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:hover , .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:visited , .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:active { border:0!important; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:active , .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u28693a65edd263721ace746b3f68a75b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Cool Cymru EssayBrain-washing is suggested by Aldous Huxley in the form of manipulatingindividuals, rather than the masses. While brain-washing and sleep-teaching aredifferent (the former being done while the subject is awake, and the latterbeing done while the subject is asleep), both methods employed by Huxley, actupon the subconscious to obtain the same final results. Prior to Brave NewWorld, Huxley researched the Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov and hisexperiments on dogs. The Pavlovian dog was subjected to highly stressfulconditions, this was done to teach the dog how to react to certain stimuli. The end results of these tests were dogs who had been broken, became mentallyinsane. Prime human examples are the veterans of the world wars, where victimsbecame incapacitated from intense stress and fear (known as shell shock). Huxley suggests that teaching under such stressful conditions can also beconsidered torture (in its most refined state). Huxley once wrote, Theeffectiveness of political and religious propaganda depends upon the methodsemployed, not upon the doctrines taught. Huxley believed that when mentallyprogramming a subject, it is not the principles that matter, but the techniquesused to instil these principles. Our modern society has come realisticallyclose to Huxleys predictions. After all, for many years already, communistshave been renowned as being experts on brain-washing (in the form of masspropaganda). This type of distortion of the human psyche lends itselfperfectly to the corruption and backward morals of Aldous Huxleys Brave NewWorld. Aldous Huxleys dystopia is structured around the use of a pleasureinducing drug called soma. Soma is a means of drowning ones sorrows to makethem feel better and to create a positive feeling towards those who supply suchhappiness (i.e. the ruling power). Such a drug, therefore, becomes the perfecttool of the dictator, as it creates a more submissive and conformist society, asociety that is easier to control. Soma becomes the perfect escape fromreality, because its use is public, not private, thus, allowing for thehappiness to be shared among friends for an all around greater high. Soma canbe considered a wonder drug, a wonder drug that has always been searched for bymedicine. After all, soma has only positive effects (i.e. no side effects),and can be used whenever necessary. Positive effects that may just reach beyondthe persons body and onto their productivity at work. A current example isJapans car industry, they believe that the dose of ginseng that each workerreceives daily, acco unts for their output being so much higher then theirAmerican counterparts. a little white tablet that keeps production workershappy. The Japanese motor industry believes it is an important aid to itsproductivity. With all the different types of drugs now available the wonderdrug-soma, will most certainly soon arrive. Soma is used in Brave New Worldthe way alcohol, smoking and drugs are used in todays society. In conclusion, the future events of which Aldous Huxley predicted, arequickly becoming a reality in todays society. It cannot be denied that eventssuch as greater sexual freedom and over-population have already occurred andare becoming even worse. As well, the use of sleep-teaching/ brain-washing andmind altering drugs continue to be experimented with on a regular basis. Allof these factors combined make for a backward, morally corrupt and ethicallydepraved modern society. It is this modern society which Aldous Huxley warnsagainst in Brave New World. English

For example, Lil’Z knows that he does not have the ability to live a life as the people outside the slum are living; he is aware that he does not have the ability to achieve, principally, the monetary success and standard of society maybe because of his lack of education and the violent environment in which he lives in. Thus, he decides to accompany the Tender Trio and rub the motel with them in order to achieve the monetary success he wants, and eventually commit many crimes in order to get money. In City of Gangs, it is explained that one of the problem in Regina is that aboriginal could have a job if they wanted, but many of these people don’t have the ability to achieve this goal since they don’t have a resume or they don’t know how to fill an application form (City of Gangs, 2009). Differential Association theory is a theory that looks at the acts of the criminal as learned behaviors through social interaction (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 132). Gang members are setting criminal norms and values to its members, thus members are learning a criminal behavior, such as stealing, carrying a gun or using drugs. The members of street gangs are learning more definitions of actions favorable to violation of the law and this learning is passed down from generation to generation (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 32). The documentary City of Gangs clearly shows that the learning pattern of gangsters comes from learned behaviors through social interaction, and that is transmitted from the older to the younger since what they learned are the criminal attitudes and values of the gang. Sutherland’s theory of differential association is explained through nine propositions. The third proposition, which explains that the principal part of the lear ning of criminal behavior occurs within intimate personal groups. , is clearly discussed in the documentary City of Gangs (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 132). In fact, as mentioned in the clip, every day more kids are getting in gang since they are hanging out with gang families made out of drug dealers, pimps and fogs (City of Gangs, 2009). The fifth proposition is also shown in the movie. If a young is surrounded by people viewing breaking certain laws as acceptable or normal behavior, then he might be more likely to break those laws. As mentioned, there is a gang problem in Regina; the police reported many as 600 gangs in cities, constituted in majority of aboriginal people (City of Gangs, 2009). The problem is that there is a gang mentality that is embedded in the hearts and minds of aboriginal people (City of Gangs, 2009). The solution is to change that mentality to really educate their young people at young age (City of Gangs, 2009). The young aboriginal people are surrounded by people who are breaking certain laws, thus for them it becomes a normal behavior. One last proposition that is clearly demonstrated in the clip is the eighth one. In fact, violence is common in this part of town and it is a dangerous place to walk at night (City of Gangs, 2009). These kids and young people are dealing with these criminal situations every day, thus they are learning out of it, like learning anything else. All of the various processes by which humans learn can potentially be relevant. Economic and Community Structure We can use the social disorganization theory to address the idea that crime and criminal networks thrive in social disorganized neighborhoods. This theory explain that an area in which there is a disintegration of conventional values caused by urbanization, rapid industrialization and an increase in immigration may causes the development of high crime (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 160). Cultural deviance theory also combines certain parts of this theory since it explains how the different set of values of disadvantaged or disorganized neighborhoods contributes to criminal behavior (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 130). These theories can be explained with the movie City of God, since it addresses the idea of the context in which crime and criminal networks flourish. City of God is a slum in Rio de Janeiro, a lower class area, marked by poverty with low income group. It is evident that there is a weak community institution in the slum, which is lacking of agents of social control such as the police or even strong familial or friends relationships. It is mainly the people who live in the City of God that maintain order. Community Action Program There are many program aimed at curbing early involvement in criminal activity. The community, not individuals, needs treatment. Helping the community, then, should lower its crime rate (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 164). Sun Youth is an organization providing community support in the area of Montreal. They established a crime prevention program aimed at educating public and establishing a better cooperation among citizens. Among their programs, there is the Intervention Agents in School Environments, targeting mainly young students. Sun Youth agents are working full time in certain schools in order to prevent bullying and taxing and to resolve conflicts between students, which is related to Coordination and Community Cohesion, a major components of another prevention program in Vancouver Downtown (Adler, Mueller,Laufer amp; Grekul, 2009, p. 165). They are preventing such problems through group workshops on leadership, peer meditation, conflict resolution, socialization, or notions of racism, friendship, etc. through individual interventions, as well as by promoting the team work through recreational activities in group (Sun Youth, 2011). Being Critical of the Structural Theories of Deviance Previous studies exploring why a person joins a gang mainly focused on the theory of anomie, the social disorganization and strain theory as well as the criminal subculture (Sanchez-Jankowski, 1991, p. 295). However, Martin Sanchez-Jankowski (1991) is basing his ideas on the fact that many youth see joining a gang as a ration al decision to maximize self-interest. He argues that gangs provide individuals with a source of money, protection, entertainment, protective group identity, personal protection, and because some individuals see participation as a form of commitment to their community and as a way to resist living lives like their parents. He also explains and that becoming a gang member depends not only on the individual, but also on the gang, who decide who will join the gang or not. He explains that there are three types of recruitment. The first one is the fraternity type, in which members try to ‘sell’ their gangs by mentioning the advantages it has such as the parties it gives, the women who are available and the type of drugs they have. The second type is the obligation type, in which members are contacting people and persuading them that it is their duty to join the gang. Finally, the last type of recruitment is the coercive type, which occurs when the gang feels they need to expand their membership quickly.

Cougar Hunting essays

Cougar Hunting essays In Washington state voters banning the use of hounds for cougar hunting in 1996. Cougars, also known as mountain lions or pumas, are native to Washington State. About 2,500 live in this state, double the populations of the early 1980s, and their numbers are growing, in the last years since this law has been pass. Cougars are the reason the deer population is going down; the average cougar kills about 65 deer a year. The following stats are a picture to show what is happening and will keep happening until we pass the hound hunting law. There have been 10 fatal cougar attacks on people recorded since 1980, but five of those were in the past 10 years. In Colorado, cougars have attacked three hikers in the last year, including killing a 10-year-old hiker in July 1997 at Rocky Mountain National Park. Non-lethal attacks are also on the rise for instance, a 6-year-old boy non-fatally attacked on July 31, 1998, in Montana. In California, a ban on all sport hunting of cougars helped double their numbers since 1972 to an estimated 5,000 animals. Even after cougars killed two California hikers, voters rejected a 1996 proposal to reinstate hunting. Hunters note that an average of 100 "problem" cougars are killed each year in California, about twice the number killed annually by hunters before the 1972 ban. Many hunters and some game officials believe cougars are becoming bolder and less scared of man in the absence of hunting. As Washington expands to the woods and outer city limits the cougars are being forced from there home and are becoming dangerously close to our family and friends. If they are not controlled they will dominate the prey and people around them. The use of hounds would be a great aid in the regaining of the cougar population in Washington and the rest of the USA. The cougar population will go back to normal when hounds are legal to use again. T ...

Book Report Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Book Report - Assignment Example Marginalized Americans retaliated via employing severe and unequaled efforts to regain their dignity, which encompassed students’ movements comprising of daring youths like Young Americans for Freedom (Young Americans for Freedom) besides others (Foner 1046). The period between 1960s until mid 1970s, marked the most decisive era in America’s history that yielded to the start of marginalized recognition, which the current natives are enjoying. This was an explosion of what the then parents were experiencing due to â€Å"want† (deprivation), which prompted them bow to the white man’s orders for survival, though, teaching their children to defy. Hence, the child’s advice, though accompanied by a contradicting parents’ action, â€Å"My Dad taught me never to bow my head to nobody.† But sometimes Daddy’s head was bowed: frequently Daddy was destroyed (p. 268). Marginalization, inequality and continuous call for white’s rule de fiance by the parents besides other rights activists pioneers, prompted the students to demand their recognition tirelessly. Consequently, surprising Americans who kept wandering what has â€Å"got into† the students. ... For illustration, hotels and even public transport buses where the whites used to assume the front seats. Besides, the people’s realization regarding the state’s mandate to intervene and improve its natives’ lives, it fueled numerous uprisings, owing to the contrary to its dealings. They contended, that when the government interferes with the work of the market economy, tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation; that when it takes from one man to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second and moral autonomy of both (p. 271). Unfair treatment and favoritism based on racialism prompted the marginalized to declare and believe that, liberty can exist only when free citizens can concertedly defend their rights against all enemies (p. 271). Civil rights’ activists like Malcolm x and other like minded who deemed that it is impossible for the oppressor to grant equality to the oppressed, also fueled severe uprisings to demand what was due to the segregated people. Consequently, continuing to the late 1970s where the American regime not wanting to tarnish their global reputation yielded to the diverse uprisings’ demands regarding equality. For instance, the initial sign was Birmingham’s events in May 1963 that overwhelmingly forced Kennedy to ban discrimination in public where its related Act attained legality during the Lyndon Johnson’s regime. Since, America by having internal wrangles entailing inequality among its natives could not declare itself the champion of freedom. Feminist movement (Redstockings) that emerged during 1969, though, short-lived had an immense influence that is evident presently. Redstockings identified male

Organizational Diagnosis Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Organizational Diagnosis - Term Paper Example The obtained results are instrumental in devising solutions. As organizations are increasing around the globe, they are creating more opportunities for organizational problems. According to Papadopoulos (2009), increasing organizations make the organizational owners and managers to encounter different conflicts with their employees and different issues; thus, negatively affecting the productivity of an organization. However, it is imperative for such managers to consider conducting organizational analysis to ensure that every organizational subsystem is functioning effectively, increasing the effectiveness of an organization. Possible issues that might occur in an organization and their preventive measures Different organizations around the globe face many issues that affect their effectiveness; hence, distorting their productivity. Therefore, this paper will draw attention on these issues. Firstly, information security is a major issue to most organizations. Information insecurity h as turned out to me a major problem affecting most organizations since most of the current organizations rely on information technology in their operations. The threats and ferociousness involved in technology have made the protection of organizational private information to be a challenge. This has resulted into other companies hacking vital information concerning their competitor negatively interfering with them (Daft, 2010). In addition, the company managers also control the employees’ personal information denying them freedom to privacy. For example, there are some organizations, which manage the private information of their employees by accessing their emails, Facebook accounts and their communications on phone information. It is important for organizations to train their employees on information security for them to prevent hacking of their organizational private information. The organizations should also ensure that they form a key password for the organizational infor mation to prevent other competing organizations from interfering with their organizational privacy. In addition, organizational managers should ensure that they balance the employees’ freedom and privacy, while at the work place when it comes to managing their personal information. For example, there are some organizations, which take control of all their employees’ personal information by monitoring how they communicate through emails while at work, as well as their computers and other accounts (Daft, 2010). Therefore, it is important for organizations to possess privacy rights hence considering potential issues on employee privacy and autonomy among employees. Secondly, most of the problems in the current organizations arise due to communication problems amongst employees. Consequently, such problems results into dissimilar negative effects such as lowering employees’ productivity, job turn over and other activities within an organization. Poor communication i s a barrier to any organization’s productivity because good communication increases productivity by enabling employees to share ideas, point out potential problems and create an environment that can solve dissimilar issues within an organization. According to Ziegenfuss (2002), good communication process in an organization, results to less problems and conflicts. In order for organizations

Và ¤xjà ¶, May 25th 2006 Emilie, Lauranne and Tytti EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Bachelor thesis in Economics at Và ¤xjà ¶ University, 2006 Authors: Lauranne Fina, Tytti Luc and Emilie Venezia Examiner: Jerzy Kociatkiewicz Tutor: Christine Lundberg Title: The Role of Cultural Differences in the Product and Promotion Adaptation Strategy: A L’Orà ©al Paris Case Study Introduction: Nowadays, firms are becoming more and more global. However, are consumers becoming global too? Therefore, the challenge for the firms consists in determining if they should adapt their products or if they should consider the consumers as being global, and keep their product standardized. The purpose of this paper is to investigate adaptation strategy in South Korea, Japan and People’s Republic of China (PRC) for make-up products and its promotion considering the influence of culture on the consumer behaviour. This is studied referring to the European market. L’Orà ©al Paris is used as an example to illustrate the study. Methodology: This study is a case study about L’Orà ©al Paris. To conduct it, we chose to use qualitative interviews and document analysis. Different kinds of interviews have been done in order to know more about the company adaptation strategy, the culture and the consumer behaviour in Asia. Written sources as external documents from L’Orà ©al Paris, websites, press articles, scientific articles and literature have been used to complete the primary data. Theoretical framework: Culture is a system of meanings shared by members of a group. It is an important part of marketing because it influences the consumers’ wants and needs and because it impacts on the interpretations of products’ communication. This demonstrates that the culture impacts consumer behaviour. The study of the consumer behaviour conducts companies to adapt their products features, their packaging, their symbolic attributes, their service attributes and their promotion. Empirical data: The empirical data comes from various sources. We interviewed three managers from L’Orà ©al Paris and as well girls from the following nationalities: three Japanese girls, one Chinese girl and two Korean girls. We also interviewed a specialist of cosmetics. All these interviews were conducted in order to answer our objectives. The interviews with the Asian girls and with the specialist of cosmetics were conducted in order to collect data on the culture and on the consumer behaviour. The interviews with the managers of L’Orà ©al Paris were conducted in order to collect data on their adaptation and standardization strategies on the studied markets. Analysis: Cultural aspects impact directly or indirectly on the consumer behaviour. The culture diversity creates the consumer behaviour diversity as it can be noticed in South Korea, Japan and PRC where the culture and the behaviours are very different than in Europe. L’Orà ©al Paris is trying to know more about these consumer behaviour differences in order to answer the consumers’ demands and to adapt its products and promotion strategy. Conclusion: L’Orà ©al Paris is adapting some elements of its product range and its promotion. The three countries studied are very different culturally speaking. However, the adaptations on products and promotion made by L’Orà ©al Paris do not take fully into account these cultural and consumer behaviour differences. Moreover, many promotion and products aspects are standardized. Thus, the L’Orà ©al Paris adaptation strategy in the Asian zone is a mix between standardization and adaptation. In its adaptation strategy, the firm considers some elements of the consumer behaviour therefore of the culture. To conclude, the cultural differences may influence the make-up products and promotion adaptation strategy.

Entrepreneurship in the Brazilian offshoring industry Essay -- Brazil

Case 1: Entrepreneurship in the Brazilian offshoring industry Brazil is one of the nations included in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). In the past, Brazil’s outsourcing industry has been the smallest of the four BRIC nations. This is very surprising due to the close proximity to the United States and the current trend of â€Å"near-shoring†. However, due to recent governmental backing and inflows of capital Brazil has begun to improve and could possibly overtake Russia, India and China in the offshoring industry. The most promising sector in Brazil is their IT sector. Capital Access Index 2009 Access to Capital Brazil is the fourth-best country in Latin America for access to capital for entrepreneurs. Much of this improvement can be seen from their significant advances in bond market development and alternative sources of capital[1]. At the end of 2008, local and foreign investors had committed $28 billion in venture and private equity capital to Brazilian companies. That's up from $6 billion in 2004, amounting to a hearty 50% compound annual growth rate over the last four years[2]. On June 25 2009, Brazilian stock exchange Bovespa hosted the world’s largest IPO, a $4.3 billion offering by Brazilian credit-card processor VisaNet. Conditions in Brazil have been improving steadily. The country has achieved macroeconomic stability and institutional maturity and is now undergoing broad and fast-paced expansion, driven by an increase in income and social ascension as well as an increasingly important position in international trade. As well, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will reach an a nnual record of US$60 billion in 2011[8]. Even though entrepreneurs are currently enjoying easy access to capital, it is a concern that co... ...et and Trade Profile, December 2011, Visit Britain. http://www.visitbritain.org/Images/Brazil_tcm29-14673.pdf [10]Nes, Egil, May 23, 2011, The Brazil Business. http://thebrazilbusiness.com/article/trends-of-doing-business-in-brazil-in-2011 [11] Brazil Economic Outlook At A Glance, June 26, 2011, Finance N Investment.com. http://www.financeninvestments.com/economics/brazil-gdp-growth.html [12]Background Note: Brazil, November 30, 2011, U.S. Department of State. http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/35640.htm [13] Baby Steps, September 17, 2011, The Economist. http://www.economist.com/node/21529045 [14] Comparing Exports of Goods Among BRIC Nations, November 8, 2011, Seeking Alpha. http://seekingalpha.com/article/306378-comparing-exports-of-goods-among-bric-nations [15]Underwood, Graham, 2012, sourcingfocus.com. http://www.sourcingfocus.com/site/opinionscomments/757/

Marketing Plan of Nike Essay

The world has a long, rich history of international trade among nations. Most international trade dates from the prevailing age of mercantilism. However, objecting mercantilism is the common idea of trade philosophies proposed by Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Both of them advocated free international trade. The rule of the zero-of-sum game was the core of mercantilism. One country increased the wealth must cause another one decreased from trade. Only one could be beneficial. They thought exports could bring inflows of wealth from and imports could lead outflows of wealth to other countries. It was this thought that each country encouraged exports and restricted imports. 1? The Classical Trade Theory (1) Theory of Adam Smith: Absolute Advantage Adam Smith set himself against the mercantilism. He advocated free trade and proposed the absolute advantage theory. In his theory, each country had its own advantage for producing goods which other country did not possess. It was this that stimulated countries to participate in the international trade by exerting the absolute advantage to obtain more benefits. Adam Smith made two assumptions: First, trade only existed between two countries. Second, each country produced only two products, one product must have absolute advantage, and the other product must have absolute disadvantage. Therefore, each country should concentrate on producing the product with absolute advantage, and then trade the absolute disadvantage product to the other country with the absolute advantage product. After trading, the disengaged, surplus resources and products of each country could be used completely reasonable. Thus, both countries can be beneficial from the trade, not just one. This pulled down the rule of zero-of-sum game and created the rule of n-of-sum game. Adam Smith’s absolute advantage theory successfully promoted the international trade. However, this theory did not deal with the problem that for both two products, one country had absolute advantages and the other country had absolute disadvantages. (2) Theory of David Ricardo: Comparative Advantage Fortunately, another famous economist David Ricardo succeeded and developed Adam Smith’s theory. Just like Adam Smith, David Ricardo also was an opponent of protectionism for national economies. He created his comparative advantage theory. The theory dealt with the problem that could not be dealt using Adam Smith’s theory. The economic motives and causes international trade. According to Ricardo’s theory, even if a country has no absolute advantage in any product, the disadvantaged country can still be beneficial from specializing in and exporting the product for which it has the lowest opportunity cost of production. Though the two theories were proposed hundreds of years, they still play important influences on international trade. Each trading country can improve productivity and the world economic is promoted. The two theories will contribute to world prosperity in the future. 2? The Modern Trade Theory Comparative advantage based on opportunity cost forms the basis of modern trade theory. The theory shows that after comparing, when the country decides to produce its advantage product, it needs to give up the other product that can come forth during the period. The benefit form the product it gives up is its opportunity cost. Here I take a simple example to illustrate this theory. The land for planting rice or cotton, the output of rice is 500 kilogram or 100 kilogram of cotton. If we choose to plant rice, the 100 kilogram of cotton we give up is our opportunity cost. Today, the practice of trade among nations is growing by leaps and bounds. There is hardly a person on earth who has not been influenced in some way by the growing trade among nations. The theories stimulate trade between developed and developing countries that avoid the autarky. International trade increases trading countries’ wealth and world output. That is because with trade, the resources are allocated rationally, job opportunity increase, products quality and variety increase and so on.
